Supporting storm cleanup efforts
As you continue to cleanup from this weekend’s storm, you may have much more leaf and yard waste than usual. Weekly collection of branches, twigs and leaves continues until Friday, June 10 in the city of Vaughan and then will return to every other week.
Please note – due to the volume of yard waste set out following the storm, waste collection crews are completing collection later than usual. Leave your materials curbside as any incomplete routes will be picked up the following day.
If putting out materials for this collection, please remember the acceptable items include:
- plant material (no soil) and leaves
- branches, twigs and cuttings that are tied in secure bundles and less than 1.5 metres (five feet) in length and 0.6 metres (two feet) in diameter, weighing less than 20.5 kilograms (45 pounds)
- individual branches that are less than 10 centimetres (four inches) in diameter, bundled securely
- pumpkins, straw and cornstalks
The materials that do not belong in leaf and yard waste include:
- stumps and root balls
- any leaf and yard waste material contaminated with household waste or non-leaf and yard waste such as green bin organics
- sod, soil, rocks or stones (contact York Region for rock and stone disposal options)
Remember, waste should be placed at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before collection and no later than 7 a.m. the day of collection. This helps to reduce the chance of materials getting knocked over, blown away by wind or wet from the rain. Visit the City’s leaf and yard waste webpage for additional details.
To help with your cleanup efforts after the storm, York Region is also offering free yard waste drop-off at McCleary Court Community Environmental Centre now until Sunday, June 5 at 130 McCleary Crt. Visit york.ca/WasteDepots for details on hours of operation.
Of note, the York Region waste depot accepts larger yard waste material – up to 30 centimetres in diameter and 1.8 metres in length. Materials such as wood, rocks, stumps and root balls are not accepted as yard waste at the waste depot. More information on yard waste requirements is available at york.ca/YardWaste.
