Taking to the greens for charity
Golfers hit the fairways yesterday at the Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua
Annual Charity Golf Classic to raise much-needed funds for more than 150
charities, not-for-profits and community organizations. The annual event was
held at Copper Creek Golf Club and the money raised goes towards providing the
gift of hope to thousands of people.
Since 2011, the Charity Golf Classic -- together with the Mayor’s Gala -- has raised more than $6.6 million to help groups that provide essential services to citizens in the city of Vaughan and beyond. Proceeds from the two events have been directed to many important causes including youth, seniors, special needs and educational organizations, women’s centres, arts and cultural initiatives, and sports groups.
With a downtown core -- the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre -- rising from the ground, the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital under construction and the recent subway opening, these and many other exciting projects are changing the landscape of our growing community. It is vital to continue to move the city forward without leaving anyone behind.
- Support for the tournament was received from the local business community through corporate and media sponsorship, product donations and silent auction items.
- Vaughan resident Elvira Caria emceed the reception.
- Distributed proceeds have been used for many important purposes, including iPads for youth with autism, expansion of hospice programs, camp programs for children, toys for kids at Christmas, to help victims of abuse and to build a new home for adults with special needs.
