Training, masks, self-assessments and signage are included in the City’s approach

While parents are busy getting kids ready to go back to school, the City of Vaughan continues to implement measures to ensure the health and safety of all citizens in response to COVID-19. This includes taking many precautions to keep school crossing guards and the children travelling to and from school safe.

The City’s approach has included training school crossing guards on COVID-19-related procedures and safety measures; providing them with masks; requiring all crossing guards to complete the Province's COVID-19 self-assessment questionnaire before reporting to work to ensure they are symptom-free; and installing signage at all school crosswalk locations to reinforce physical distancing.

As a reminder, the City is hiring school crossing guards for the 2020/21 school year. These dedicated individuals work every school day to assist children walking across intersections throughout Vaughan.

Being a school crossing guard is not only a rewarding occupation, it also offers a flexible work schedule. A typical day for a crossing guard includes the following:

  • Up to three shifts per day – one in the morning, one at lunch and one in the afternoon – however, most crosswalk locations only require two shifts per day.
  • Varying shift times, depending on location, that range between 35 minutes to 90 minutes.

With more than 112 crosswalk locations throughout Vaughan, both permanent and standby crossing guards are needed to service all locations. There are crosswalk locations in Concord (PDF), Kleinburg (PDF), Maple (PDF), Thornhill (PDF) and Woodbridge (PDF). You may also view a map of all crossing guard locations in Vaughan.

The City recruits, trains and hires school crossing guards, conducts pedestrian studies, selects crosswalk locations and installs appropriate signage and pavement markings.
