Work includes site preparation for future park development

The transformation of North Maple Regional Park (NMRP) continues! Since the completion of Phase 1, the park has become a popular destination. The next stage of park development is in motion.

This stage of construction will prepare 52 hectares (130 acres) of the park for future development of new recreational facilities and amenities. To prepare this site for the future, the scope of work includes:

  • site grading and stormwater management
  • installation of underground services (water, storm, sanitary, electrical, gas and telecom)
  • reconstruction and extension of the current park roadway, in addition to creating a second park access from Keele Street
  • environmental restoration, enhancement, and connection of the existing pond, wetland, and habitat areas

As part of this work, environmental restoration is a priority. This will include removing current trees, grasses and shrubs which will be replanted in a way that improves the ecosystems onsite. All work is being completed in coordination with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.

Construction is underway and will take place in stages. It is expected to be completed by fall 2023. Different areas of the park will be closed to the public with onsite signage and fencing during each stage. The existing parking lot, artificial turf fields and pavilion will remain open throughout the construction.

Learn more about NMRP’s development
In April 2018, Council endorsed the vision to develop NMRP into a signature 900-acre park with outstanding recreation and culture opportunities. The full park vision will be built in several stages over the coming years.

In 2018, 80 hectares (197 acres) of parkland was opened to the public with the following facilities:

  • two FIFA-certified artificial turf soccer fields with built-in spectator seating
  • a park pavilion, which includes a terrace, washrooms, changerooms and water fountains (open 2019)
  • picnic areas with shade shelters and seating
  • a toboggan hill
  • an asphalt parking area with room for 200 vehicles
  • variety of walking and hiking trails

Trail improvements began in the fall of 2021 and are expected to be completed by this summer. Upgrades include paving existing trails, replacing the Nevada Park Bridge and adding seating, planting and signage. These trail improvements are funded by the Government of Canada’s COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, and by the Government of Ontario.

Advancing NMRP’s development remains a 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan priority project. For more information about North Maple Regional Park, visit vaughan.ca/NMRP
