Vaughan Celebrates Chanukah with Menorah Lighting Ceremony at City Hall
βDec. 5, 2013
Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council joined residents, guests and City staff on Wednesday, Dec. 4 for a special menorah lighting ceremony at Vaughan City Hall in celebration of Chanukah. The ceremony marked the eighth and final night of Chanukah.
Chanukah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday celebrated each year to commemorate the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the second century BC. The festival is observed by the lighting of the menorah, which is the most recognizable symbol of Chanukah.
Rabbi Mendel Kaplan, founder and spiritual leader of Chabad@Flamingo, led the menorah lighting ceremony. He was joined by students from the Lubavitch Yeshiva of Toronto who provided musical accompaniment. Special doughnuts called sufganiyot, a traditional treat served at Chanukah festivities, were also enjoyed by those attending the event.
