Feb. 13, 2014

Join the City of Vaughan as it celebrates Chinese New Year and welcomes the Year of the Horse with a special event on Sunday, Feb. 16 from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Vaughan City Hall. There will be an official welcome by the Mayor and Members of Council at 2 p.m.

“The City of Vaughan takes pride in the rich multicultural heritage that makes up our great city,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “Chinese New Year is a wonderful cultural celebration that allows all of us to unite in sharing the customs and traditions of our Chinese community, and celebrate one of the greatest strengths of our City – diversity.”

Held in partnership with the Federation of Chinese Canadians in York Region (FCCYR) and presented by PowerStream, the celebration will begin with a traditional lion dance and eye-dotting ceremony. Following the formal stage presentations, there will be cultural performances by a Feng Shi Master, the Shaolin Monks, Kung Fu Kids, God of Fortune, children’s folk dancing and traditional Chinese singing, as well as fun family activities such as Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting, magic games and art displays. There will also be Chinese refreshments available donated by Paradise Banquet and Convention Centre.

"Chinese New Year is one of the most significant holidays in Asian culture, as it brings our community together in celebration of a new year ahead,” said Ward 4 Councillor Sandra Yeung Racco. “It’s a perfect opportunity for families of all cultures to experience and learn about Chinese heritage.”
The Year of the Horse ends on Feb. 18, 2015. The horse is the seventh of 12 animal signs in the Chinese zodiac.
