Vaughan Celebrates National Youth Week and Youth Arts Week With Free Activities

The City of Vaughan marks National Youth Week and Youth Arts Week from May 1 to 7 with free games, fitness classes, sports tournaments, arts exhibits and dance activities for youth ages 10 to 17 at community centres across Vaughan.
 
The Vaughan Youth Week schedule features activities for all interests and abilities. Highlights include:
 
     Sports competitions: badminton, basketball, dodge ball, futsal and soccer
     Boot camp and zumba classes and access to Vaughan Fitness Centres for ages 13 to 17
     Recreational swims, aquafitness classes and water polo games
     Kinect and Xbox 360 challenge and ping-pong tournaments
     Deejay clinic and hip-hop dance workshop
     Movie night
 
As part of Vaughan Youth Arts Week celebrations, the City will showcase the artistic talents of community youth with displays at Vaughan City Hall and the Vaughan Arts Space from May 1 to 24. The artwork will feature a variety of works including mixed media, photography, paintings and collage works. Highlights will include:
 
·         Memento Mori and Youth Portraits, designed by students from Westmount Collegiate Institute, will be on display at Vaughan City Hall’s Atrium gallery, located at 2141 Major Mackenzie Drive. It will run Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
 
·         Dreams - Painting and Photography, created by Holy Cross Academy students, will be on display at the newly-opened Vaughan Arts Space, Maple Community Centre, 10190 Keele Street, Tuesday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
 
Vaughan’s celebration of National Youth Art Week culminates with Vaughan Youth Arts Night, which will be held at Vaughan City Hall on May 8 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event’s feature presentation is Memento Mori and Youth Portraits. Photography, mixed media, art canvas pieces and collage works will be on display. As well, there will be a display of artwork by Vaughan students created during a workshop Rock 'n' Roll Art, facilitated by local youth artists Jonathan Hiltz and Brooke Opatowski.
 
National Youth Week and Youth Arts Week are held annually during the first week of May to empower youth and celebrate their achievements, skills, talents and creative expression.
