Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service Promotes Working Smoke Alarms for Fire Prevention Week
Sept. 30, 2014
Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS), in collaboration with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and the National Fire Protection Association, is promoting the importance of working smoke alarms for Fire Prevention Week, which runs from Oct. 5 to 11.
The annual public safety and education campaign raises awareness about fire safety and prevention. This year’s theme — working smoke alarms save lives — encourages residents to test their alarms every month. Approximately 50 per cent of all fire fatalities occur in homes without working smoke alarms.
VFRS will kick off the week with a community event on Sunday, Oct. 5 at Vellore Village Community Centre, 1 Villa Royale Ave., Woodbridge, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Special guests include VFRS firefighters and fire prevention inspectors, Sparky the fire dog, York Regional Police and York Region Emergency Medical Services.
During Fire Prevention Week, residents are invited to these open houses at local fire stations to learn fire safety tips and get information about smoke and carbon monoxide alarms:
- Oct. 6 – Station 7-8, 111 Racco Pkwy., Thornhill, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- Oct. 7 – Station 7-5, 2 Fieldstone Dr., Woodbridge, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
