Vaughan Recognizes National Public Works Week with Special Events

The City of Vaughan invites residents to attend the 10th annual Public Works Day on Saturday, May 24, in celebration of National Public Works Week’s 54th anniversary. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine, in the northeast parking lot at the City’s Joint Operations Centre, 2800 Rutherford Rd.

Public Works Day event activities include:
 
• Display of City vehicles and equipment
• Mulch giveaway – bring a reusable container (limit three containers per vehicle)
• Blue boxes, green bins and backyard composter sales – receive a replacement for damaged City-issued boxes and bins at no charge
• Water quality, wastewater, roads maintenance, GIS and survey displays
• Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service display
• By-law and compliance display
• Household hazardous and electronic waste recycling
 
 
Participants include:
 
• York Region – ‘Water for Tomorrow’ and solid waste management displays
• Shred It International Inc. – limited document shredding on-site
• Ontario One Call – "Call before you dig"
• Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests – learn how to protect and improve Vaughan’s urban forest
• Lions Club – bring in your old electronic equipment for recycling
 
On Wednesday, May 21, Vaughan Public Works staff will participate in the York Region Area Municipalities Challenge designed to highlight the skills of public works crews from the nine area municipalities and York Region. This event will take place at Richmond Green, 1300 Elgin Mills Rd. E., beside the Richmond Hill Operations Centre.
 
National Public Works Week runs from May 18 to 24, and the theme this year is building for today, planning for tomorrow. The theme recognizes the essential services public works professionals provide to residents, and highlights the stewardship they bring to communities across the country.
