Learn what materials can and can’t be placed curbside

Vaughan’s weekly leaf and yard waste collection is back! Starting this week, you can place these materials curbside no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before and no later than 7 a.m. on your collection day. Every other week collection will begin on June 14.

Leaf and yard waste must be placed out in Kraft paper bags or open-top rigid containers with handles, up to 121 litres (32 gallons) in size, and clearly marked “Leaf and Yard Waste.” Plastic bags are not permitted.

Yard waste stickers can be mailed out upon request through Access Vaughan by calling 905-832-2281 or by email at accessvaughan@vaughan.ca. Kraft paper bags must be kept dry – degraded bags will not be picked up as they will break during collection. Please protect paper bags from rain and moisture. Companies hired for lawn care services must be notified of these requirements; bags cannot be placed out before collection day.

As a reminder, here are items that are accepted in leaf and yard waste collection:

  • branches
  • flowers and plants
  • leaves
  • shrubs
  • twigs
  • vegetable garden waste
  • weeds

Here are items not accepted:

  • rocks or stones
  • soil
  • stumps and root balls

You are also encouraged to purchase a backyard composter and leave grass clippings on the lawn to decrease the amount of leaf and yard waste placed at the curb.

Protecting pollinator-friendly species

The City of Vaughan’s leaf and yard waste weekly collection begins the third week of April each year to help protect native and pollinator-friendly species. You are encouraged to help protect pollinators by delaying any seasonal yard work to later in the spring when temperatures are around 15 degrees Celsius and above. Yard waste provides winter shelter for butterflies, moths, bees and other pollinating insects. In early spring, these insects are still hibernating inside leaves, stems and twigs, and collecting them too early might indirectly harm them and the environment. Learn more about these pollinator initiatives and how you can get involved at vaughan.ca/environment.

Understanding and respecting the environmental impacts of leaf and yard waste collection affirms Vaughan’s commitment to environmental stewardship through protection and proactive environmental management, as outlined in the City’s 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan.
