Every month, the City releases a series called ‘You Asked, We Answered,’ where common questions received and responded to by Service Vaughan are highlighted.

Below are the top five inquiries from September:

1. How can I purchase an on-street parking permit?

In Vaughan, on-street parking is allowed for up to three hours without a permit between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. – unless otherwise signed or prohibited by the Parking By-law (PDF). On-street parking is not allowed between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., unless the vehicle has a valid permit for that date, time and location.

The City offers three types of parking permits you can purchase:

  • Visitor Parking Permits – Residents may buy permits for their visitors to park on City streets.
  • Construction Parking Permits – Residents may buy permits to park their vehicle(s) on the street during construction projects or maintenance activities that prevent them from parking on their own driveway.
  • Resident Monthly Parking Permits – Residents may buy monthly parking permits to park their vehicle(s) on streets in designated areas.

Parking permit applications are available online. Permits are electronic and do not need to be printed or displayed. They are non-transferable between licence plate numbers. Unused permit dates cannot be cancelled and reissued later if the dates have already passed. You can pay by Visa, MasterCard or American Express. Debit and any other type of debit credit card are not accepted. Visitor parking permits are $7 per permit for up to 10 days.

The Parking By-law is enforced 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. Enforcement officers patrol the city issuing tickets for parking violations.

2. When does leaf and yard waste collection take place?

The City’s leaf and yard waste collection will continue bi-weekly on your regularly scheduled collection day until the week of Oct. 17, at which time weekly collection will begin.

Place your materials at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before and no later than 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day. If you hire a lawn care service company, they must be notified of these requirements. If the forecast calls for inclement weather overnight – like strong winds or heavy rain – wait to place your materials out in the morning.

Leaf and yard waste must be placed out in Kraft paper bags or open-top rigid containers with handles, up to 121 litres (32 gallons) in size, and clearly marked “Leaf and Yard Waste.” Plastic bags are not permitted. Kraft paper bags must be kept dry – wet or damaged bags cannot be picked up as they will break during collection.

The City continues to collect waste as quickly and efficiently as possible; however, due to the higher volumes of material in the fall, there may be pickup delays during the season. If this happens, you are asked to leave your waste out until it’s collected.

Visit the City’s leaf and yard waste webpage for more information.

3. How can I stay informed about what’s happening in my neighbourhood?

The best way to know what’s going on in Vaughan is through the Mayor and Members of Council’s eNewsletters!

These eNewsletters provide timely information and news from your community. Topics can include events, weather alerts, engagement opportunities, disruption notices, Public Meetings, community programs and so much more. And since news is distributed directly from your Mayor, local Ward Councillors or Regional Councillors, the information you receive will be specific to the area you live in.

4. Where do I report garbage or litter in parks and other public spaces?

Let’s work together to keep Vaughan’s parks and trails clean. For the safety and well-being of everyone in the community, littering and dumping are prohibited under the Dumping By-law 103-2020 (PDF). Individuals found dumping their household garbage are subject to a maximum fine of $5,000 per offence.

If you witness illegal dumping or littering, please report it to Service Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or service@vaughan.ca. You can also report litter online.

5. Does the City provide water shut-off and turn-on services?

Yes! If your property is undergoing repairs or renovations, you can request the water supply to your home be turned on or off. Non-emergency requests must be made three to five business days before the shut off or turn on is required. You can complete this request in two ways:
