Emergency Preparedness Week is a great time to make plans and an emergency kit

The COVID-19 pandemic has proven that emergencies and disasters can happen anywhere and at any time. Prevention and preparation are essential. During National Emergency Preparedness Week, from Sunday, May 2 to Saturday, May 8, the City of Vaughan reminds you that you are more prepared than you think.

It may seem like a daunting task to prepare for an emergency, but you likely have most – if not all – of the suggested items and tools at home already. There are three important steps to take to ensure you are ready for an emergency:
  • Make a plan.
  • Prepare an emergency kit (including flashlight, spare batteries, canned food and water).
  • Be informed.
During Emergency Preparedness Week, take some time to educate yourself and members of your household on what to do in the event of an emergency. Knowing what actions to take before, during and after an emergency can help minimize stress and prevent injuries or damages if one occurs. To learn more, watch the City’s video or visit vaughan.ca/EmergencyPlanning.

You can also test your knowledge by taking a quiz online or daily on Instagram. Have a tip you want to share? Be sure to post on the City’s Emergency Preparedness message board with your ideas about how to be prepared for an emergency.

During an emergency, the City is responsible for assessing its impact on the community, protecting the health, safety and well-being of citizens, determining re-entry procedures if an evacuation occurs and implementing recovery strategies. Vaughan’s Emergency Plan (PDF) was established to ensure the City is as ready as possible for an emergency.

The City is committed to fostering an active, safe and diverse community by ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens. This is a key priority in the 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan.
