Vaughan resident recognized for commitment to volunteerism and environmental stewardship

During today's Committee of the Whole (1) meeting, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, Ward 4 Councillor Sandra Yeung Racco and Members of Council presented Vaughan resident Svetlana Katcharovski with the 2021 Ward 4 Civic Hero Award.

Svetlana is the creator of Act Clean Vaughan, a grassroots community initiative with more than 300 active volunteers who co-ordinate regular community cleanups to preserve Vaughan's parklands, ravines and open spaces for future generations. The group collaborates with regional and municipal staff to raise public awareness on the importance of environmental stewardship.

Since its inception, Act Clean Vaughan has led several community makeover events in local parks, schoolyards, open spaces, woodlots and public boulevard areas. In the last year alone, its members have partnered with other community service groups to cultivate an active network of student volunteers, collect more than 350 bags of garbage from Vaughan's neighbourhoods and establish an adopt-a-mailbox program.

Svetlana is also a dedicated volunteer who lends her time to support the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and Mackenzie Health.
