On Thursday, June 16, 2011, the City of Vaughan will recognize older adult residents who participated in the New Horizons: Seniors Art Class. Their artwork will be showcased during an exhibition held at Vaughan City Hall, 2141 Major Mackenzie Drive, between 6:00-8:30 p.m.

Artwork on display will include hand painted ceramic plates, acrylic landscape paintings, colourful chalk drawings of exotic birds, floral paintings and drawings, and charcoal landscape works.

The New Horizons: Seniors Art Class – designed  to engage seniors, particularly those in isolated situations, in creative art projects – was comprised of free, weekly art workshops held from March 2010 through to April 2011.  More than 40 older adult participants were enrolled in the various sessions, which were held at Chancellor and Dufferin Clark Community Centres on Saturdays. Some of the art techniques introduced included acrylic painting, charcoal and chalk drawing, clay and ceramic plate painting. Classes were taught by local artist and Vaughan teacher, Stephanie Carrera; volunteers from the community also provided assistance. Program sponsors included Vaughan companies Soho Art Materials and Bisque it! Pottery Painting Studio.

New Horizons: Seniors Art Class was supported by a $25,000 grant received from New Horizons for Seniors Program, a federal Grants and Contributions program that supports projects led or inspired by seniors who make a difference in the lives of others and in their communities.
