Emergency Preparedness Week is a great time to educate yourself on what to do in an emergency

Emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time – sometimes without warning. During Emergency Preparedness Week, on now until Saturday, May 7, the City of Vaughan is sharing important information to remind you that you are more prepared for an emergency than you think.

Prevention and preparation are essential. When you are enjoying the outdoors this summer, always be aware of your surroundings. Whether heading to the cottage or taking a road trip, there are things you can do to ensure you have a fun and safe summer. There are three steps to take to ensure you are prepared for an emergency:
  • make a plan: creating an emergency plan (PDF) with every family member is the first step to being prepared.
  • prepare an emergency kit: gather enough supplies to last 72 hours.
  • be informed by knowing the risks: Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service’s Emergency Planning division develops strategies to address potential hazards and threats specific to Vaughan. Visit risks to Vaughan and get tips on how to be prepared in the event of an emergency.

During Emergency Preparedness Week, take some time to educate yourself and members of your household on what to do in the event of an emergency. Knowing what actions to take before, during and after an emergency can help minimize stress and prevent injuries or damages if one occurs. To learn more, visit vaughan.ca/EmergencyPlanning.

You can also test your knowledge by taking a quiz online or daily on Instagram. Have a safety tip you want to share? Be sure to post on the City’s Emergency Preparedness Week message board with your ideas about how to be prepared for an emergency.

During an emergency, the City is responsible for assessing its impact on the community, protecting the health, safety and well-being of citizens, determining re-entry procedures if an evacuation occurs and implementing recovery strategies. Vaughan’s Emergency Plan (PDF) was established to ensure the City is as ready as possible for an emergency.

The City is committed to fostering an active, safe and diverse community by ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens. This is a key priority in the 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan.
