Celebrating Benjamin Vaughan Day

City offices will be closed on Aug. 3

Residents and visitors will be celebrating Benjamin Vaughan Day on Aug. 3 this year. The City of Vaughan isn’t the only municipality to rename the civic holiday. Many cities have made the change to honour a historically-significant person. In Vaughan’s case, the holiday commemorates Benjamin Vaughan, a British diplomat and the City’s namesake.

The City has proudly recognized Benjamin Vaughan Day since Council approved the name change in 2013. In 1783, Vaughan represented British interests as co-negotiator of the Treaty of Paris that ended the American Revolutionary War, and was instrumental in keeping Upper Canada, which was later to become Ontario, under British rule.

The following City offices will be closed:
  • City of Vaughan municipal offices, including Vaughan City Hall and the Joint Operations Centre, will be closed on Monday, Aug. 3.
  • Vaughan community centres and swimming pools will be closed on Monday, Aug. 3, with the exception of the Thornhill Outdoor Pool, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. In addition, programs at all community centres will be cancelled from Saturday, Aug. 1 to Monday, Aug. 3.
