Chanukah Celebrated at City Hall with Menorah Lighting Ceremony
A special menorah lighting ceremony in celebration of Chanukah was held at Vaughan City Hall on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council joined residents, guests and City staff for the special event. The ceremony marked the first night of Chanukah.
Chanukah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday celebrated each year to commemorate the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the second century BC. The festival is observed by the lighting of the menorah, which is the most recognizable symbol of Chanukah.
Rabbi Mendel Kaplan, founder and spiritual leader of Chabad@Flamingo performed the menorah lighting ceremony and offered blessings. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed special doughnuts called sufganiyot, a traditional treat served at Chanukah festivities.
