Poor air quality impacts some of Vaughan’s recreation programs

As a result of poor air quality in York Region due to wildfire smoke, the City of Vaughan is temporarily relocating outdoor City-run recreation programs indoors until further notice. Impacted registrants will be contacted directly with more information.

All City facilities and amenities, including sport fields, ball diamonds and parks/splashpads, remain open and there are no impacts to indoor programming

Oasis Beach Volleyball league games at the Sports Village are cancelled on Wednesday, June 7 and Thursday, June 8. Visit sportsvillage.ca for more information.

For those registered in programs run by third-party leagues or other sports organizations, please contact them directly for updates on their operations.

Poor air quality may continue to impact programs until further notice. The City is monitoring the situation and will share updates as they become available.

Environment Canada update

Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for Vaughan due to high levels of air pollution caused by smoke from forest fires in Quebec and northeastern Ontario. Poor air quality is expected to continue into the weekend.

While poor air quality can affect everyone, children, seniors and those with heart or lung disease are more at risk from the negative effects of outdoor air pollution. York Region Public Health is notifying the public and partners to monitor local conditions and take precautions to reduce exposure to air pollution.

For more details, please consult the Government of Canada’s website on wildfire smoke, air quality and your health.
