Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council today thanked residents, businesses, schools and City staff for their donations to the City of Vaughan Toy Drive in support of the CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish. The Mayor also presented a joint donation of $10,000, from the money raised at the Mayor’s Gala and by PowerStream, to the CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish program.

“The spirit of generosity defines the City of Vaughan. This year we collected over 8,000 toys for this worthy initiative,” said Mayor Bevilacqua. “We are very happy that thousands of children will receive a gift that will put a smile on their faces Christmas morning. I want to thank all of the residents and community partners who have generously donated to the CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish – their caring, compassionate and giving spirit inspire us all.”

The toy drive began with an official launch on Wednesday November 14 at St. Stephen Catholic Elementary School. Local schools, residents and businesses were invited to take part by dropping off new, unwrapped toys for children aged newborn to 18 years-of-age at any one of several locations across the City.

“Once again City staff and the community have come together to support this important annual event and help make the holidays a special time for children,” said City Manager Clayton Harris. “The success of the toy drive would not be possible without the generosity of spirit that exists throughout the City and the work of staff that promoted and organized the collecting of toys at City Hall, community centres, libraries and fire halls.”

This year marks the 46th Annual CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish. The CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish is one of the largest distributors of toys to those in need in the Greater Toronto Area. In 2011, the Wish program supported 300,000 individuals through toy and financial assistance.
