The City of Vaughan has earned an international award of excellence in budgeting for a fifth consecutive year by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award was presented to Council by the City’s Budgeting and Financial Planning Department.

“This award recognizes excellence in budgeting and sets a standard for local governments across North America,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “Receiving the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for five years in a row demonstrates the City is a well-managed municipality with an effective budgeting process. The City’s goal of providing residents and business with value for their tax dollars is possible because of our effective financial planning and this award honours our hard work.”

The award-winning 2013 budget document provides a comprehensive financial overview of the City’s budget guidelines and process, financial policies, operating and capital budgets, and reserves. It is available to the public on the City’s website at vaughan.ca/budget.

The GFOA award represents a significant achievement as it reflects the commitment of a governing body and staff to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting. The award demonstrates how a government satisfied nationally-recognized guidelines for an effective budget presentation by creating a document that serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operational guide and a communications’ device.  The 2013 budget document was rated by three independent government reviewers on 27 criteria.
