The City of Vaughan has set a new record with its donation to the United Way of York Region. In a special presentation at Council today, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council presented a cheque to Daniele Zanotti, Chief Executive Officer of the United Way, for $75,133.23. This is in addition to the $30,000 the Mayor has committed from the money raised this year at the Mayor’s Gala and the Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua Annual Charity Golf Classic, bringing the total donated to $105,253.06.

“We have incredible staff at the City of Vaughan and it is their drive and initiative that led to us breaking our previous record amount raised for the United Way of York Region,” said Mayor Bevilacqua. “I am incredibly proud of the efforts of City employees and their commitment to an organization that is dedicated to making a positive difference in our community by helping those who need it most. By working together, we are making stronger communities for everyone.”

The majority of the money came from staff donations and a number of special events held in October and November. Payroll donations accounted for $51,750. This year, there were 23 staff-led events raising more than $23,500. Activities included the City's third fire truck pull, numerous bake sales, pizza lunches, candy and snack sales, a Halloween costume competition and a pool tournament.

"When it comes to the United Way and the importance of giving, our staff realize that generosity is a lifestyle, not a decision,” said Interim City Manager Barbara Cribbett. “I would like to thank the co-chairs of the 2013 United Way Campaign, Paul Jankowski, Commissioner of Engineering and Public Works, and Joseph Pittari, Commissioner of Strategic and Corporate Services, and the many volunteers who helped make this year’s campaign an unqualified success."
