Clean-Up Continues In Vaughan After Ice Storm
Dec. 30, 2013
Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua is thanking residents, first responders, PowerStream and City crews for their outstanding efforts following the recent ice storm. The City is continuing with clean-up efforts to remove fallen tree debris from roadsides, parks and other public areas.
“This has been a challenging time for our residents, especially during the holiday season, to have their lives disrupted with power outages and restricted travel,” said Mayor Bevilacqua. “I am proud of the response by City staff, the front-line workers of PowerStream, other first responders and crews from neighbouring municipalities who stepped up, gave up their holidays, and assisted our residents. It was also great to see neighbour helping neighbour, that’s what our city is all about and it makes me proud as Mayor.”
With the majority of power back on in Vaughan, the City is now entering the next phase of the clean-up within the community. The City of Peterborough and Simcoe County sent crews for two days to help clear fallen trees blocking roads and driveways to make streets safer for residents and emergency vehicles.
“There is still a lot of work to be done and we are utilizing all of our resources to remove tree debris from areas and continue with the clean up operation,” said Mayor Bevilacqua. “I ask for everyone’s patience and continued cooperation as we complete our work.”
Residents are being asked not to approach work crews or work sites as conditions can be hazardous with falling ice from trees. Throughout the city, ice-covered trees pose a greater hazard with fluctuating temperatures.
Residents are asked to report downed trees where they pose a danger by calling 905-832-2281 (press 0 for dispatch). The City is responding to these calls on a priority basis. For updates on clearing tree debris, visit vaughan.ca/snow and select Sidewalk Clearing.
The City thanks residents for their continued patience and co-operation as we clean up from this major ice storm.
