Do you ‘snow’ about Vaughan’s anti-icing operations?

Even before the snow falls, the City of Vaughan’s winter crews work proactively and continuously to ensure roads remain clear for everyone travelling through our city.

Keeping the community safe, informed and moving throughout the winter months is a top priority. Understanding what anti-icing involves and when the service begins will help you prepare for the upcoming winter season. 

Here’s everything you need to know before snowy weather makes an appearance:

What is anti-icing?

Anti-icing is completed using brine, a liquid made of rock salt and water. It is sprayed on the road surface in anticipation of freezing temperatures to prevent the formation of black ice or before a winter snowstorm. Brine works immediately as a barrier, so precipitation doesn't stick to the road and slippery conditions are avoided.

When does the City anti-ice?

Before a snowfall, the City prepares roads by spraying brine in specific locations throughout Vaughan, including on bridges, hills and curves. Even if there is no precipitation, the brine can stay active on the road and provide a layer of protection for several days. And good news – it is not harmful to pets and vehicles, and washes away with water!
