Place up to six garbage items out during the collection weeks of Jan. 4 or 11

You might be packing up your decorations and declaring the first week of the new year as ‘holiday cleanup.’ If so, the City of Vaughan is reminding you that Double-Up Days and Christmas tree collection are on now!

Double-Up Days

On your regular garbage collection day this week or next, you can place up to six items at the curb – no paid tags required. Large or bulky items, such as mattresses, can also be placed curbside for pickup, and each piece counts as one item toward the six-item limit. All materials must be set out by 7 a.m. on collection day. Read the guidelines for setting out large or bulky items or visit vaughan.ca/waste for additional details. Please be patient as winter weather and changing weather conditions may delay pickup.

Not sure? Check first!

Unsure what items belong in the garbage or what can be recycled? Download the waste reduction app, Recycle Coach, through the Apple App Store or Google Play to help determine what goes where. The app also provides waste-less tips and a personalized collection schedule with optional alerts on what to put at the curb each week.

How to exchange or purchase a blue box or green bin

The City is temporarily pausing the purchase of new blue boxes, green bins and garbage tags from community centres during the facility closures. To purchase blue boxes, green bins, kitchen containers or garbage tags online, visit vaughan.ca/ServiceVaughan. Sign up and pay through Service Vaughan and schedule a delivery for the bins or garbage tags to arrive right to your door. Home delivery fees are $2.50 per bin. You can also exchange damaged City-issued blue boxes and green bins through Service Vaughan.

Christmas tree collection

For the weeks of January 4 and January 11, real Christmas trees will be collected curbside on your regularly scheduled waste collection day. Christmas tree collection is in addition to the six-item garbage limit during Double-Up Days.  Artificial trees, however, must be bagged and are collected as garbage. Artificial trees count as one item toward the six-item limit.

For the safety of the City’s waste collectors, follow these tips to ensure a quick and efficient pickup:

  • Do not place your real Christmas tree in a tree bag or plastic bag, as that will not be collected.
  • Remove all decorations (including tinsel and ornaments) and stands prior to collection.
  • Ensure your tree is less than two metres (seven feet) in height. Cut the tree in half if it exceeds this height.

Any remaining yard waste material can be set out with Christmas trees for collection. Please ensure yard waste bags are kept dry, and only set out on collection day.

Real Christmas trees can also be dropped off at York Region Waste Depots that accept yard waste (fees apply). The Vaughan location is at 130 McCleary Crt. Visit york.ca/WasteDepots for more information.

Residential appliance and metal pickup

Have you upgraded your appliances over the holidays and are looking to dispose of old appliances or large metal items? The City collects these items by appointment only on Thursdays. Book an appointment and payment through Service Vaughan or call Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281. For more information, visit the City’s Appliance and Metal Pickup webpage.

Winter Waste Placement

During the winter months, all waste materials must be kept off the road and snowbanks. Where possible, waste should be set out on the right side of the driveway when facing the house, approximately one metre from the curb. Continue to check vaughan.ca/waste for updates and changes to service levels and schedules.
