Place up to six garbage items curbside this week or next, depending on your collection day

Double-Up Days are back! Depending on your scheduled collection day, this week or next is your chance to place up to six garbage items curbside – and no paid tags are needed.

Here are some reminders to keep in mind:

  • Place your items at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before collection and no later than 7 a.m. the day of collection.
  • Large or bulky items, such as mattresses, chairs and tables, can also be placed curbside, and each piece counts as one item toward the six-item limit. Read the guidelines for setting out large or bulky items for more information.
    • The City of Vaughan also picks up toilets curbside – watch this short video on how to disassemble a two-piece toilet properly for collection. Two-piece toilets must be disassembled to be picked up curbside.
  • All household hazardous waste (such as paint), electronic waste (such as cellphones and laptops) and batteries are not collected curbside and must be taken to a York Region waste depot.

Christmas tree collection is also starting this week!

The City will collect Christmas trees this week and next, depending on your scheduled collection day. Artificial trees are collected as garbage and must be bagged.

For the safety of the City’s waste collectors, follow these tips:

  • Do not place your real Christmas tree in a tree bag or plastic bag.
  • Remove all decorations (including tinsel and ornaments) and stands before collection.
  • Ensure your tree is less than two metres (seven feet) in height. Cut the tree in half if it exceeds this height.
  • Safely package any broken glass, such as ornaments or décor, in a sealed cardboard box labelled “broken glass,” then place the box curbside with your regular garbage.

Real Christmas trees can also be dropped off at a York Region waste depot that accepts yard waste (fees will apply). Visit york.ca/WasteDepots for more information.

If you have leftover leaf and yard waste materials, you can also place them curbside during Christmas tree collection.

What goes where?

If you’re unsure what items belong in the garbage versus the blue box or green bin, download the Recycle Coach app through the Apple App Store or Google Play to help determine what goes where. The app also provides waste-less tips and a personalized collection schedule with optional alerts on what to put at the curb each week.
