Getting rid of a toilet?

Separate the bowl from the tank for the safety of our collectors

Disposing of toilets is a two-step job! If you have an old or broken toilet to throw away, there are a few things you need to know before placing it at the curb for collection.

For the safety of our waste collectors, you must separate the toilet tank from the bowl for all two-piece toilets before placing it curbside. Crews will not collect toilets that are not separated. Need help disassembling yours? Watch this short video. Remember, each toilet and large or bulky item counts as one item toward the three-item limit.

Do not place the toilet in a cardboard box unless it has broken into smaller pieces. Broken pieces must be placed in a cardboard box labelled “broken glass” and taped securely to prevent injury to collection staff.

If you missed your collection day, you can drop off toilets at any York Region waste depot – fees may apply. The Vaughan location is at 130 McCleary Crt.

Other large and bulky items

If you have other large or bulky items to dispose of, such as chairs, mattresses and tables, here’s what you need to know:

  • The items must be kept dry and cannot exceed 68 kilograms (150 pounds) to reduce the weight for collection crews.
  • All items must be free of sharp and hazardous objects, such as nails.
  • Sofa beds must have the mattress removed and the frame securely tied. The City of Vaughan reserves the right to refuse unsafe, overweight or oversized items.

Irregular-shaped objects

  • Irregular-shaped objects that cannot fit into the proper waste bin will be collected if the item does not exceed 1.5 metres (five feet) in length and a maximum of 0.9 metres (1.5 feet) in any other dimension.
  • Ensure items are secured in a bundle not exceeding 20 kilograms (45 pounds).
  • Check to confirm all items are not defined as non-collectible waste.

Remember to place your items at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before collection and no later than 7 a.m. the day of collection. If the forecast calls for rain or wind overnight, place your waste out in the morning. Read the guidelines for setting out large or bulky items for more information.
