Help inform the City’s new Integrated Urban Water Plan
The City of Vaughan is developing a new Integrated Urban Water Plan to address the
community’s water, wastewater and stormwater needs for current and future
generations – and we need your input.
To help inform the plan, an Integrated Urban Water Plan Environmental Assessment is underway – this assessment includes a review of existing water infrastructure, such as watermains, and wastewater and stormwater drainage systems. The purpose is to document a strategy to support population growth. Public feedback collected to date has helped identify concerns, solutions, environmental impacts and more. As the next phase begins, you are once again encouraged to get involved.
Have your say by:
- reviewing the plans online and providing input via a survey. Visit vaughan.ca/UrbanWaterPlan to review study materials, learn about key findings to date and complete a survey until Sunday, July 31.
- joining a live virtual presentation on Monday, July 25 at 7 p.m. You will learn more about what the Integrated Urban Water Plan is, review work completed to date – including assessments, environmental considerations and recommended solutions – and participate in a live question-and-answer session with the project team. Register at vaughan.ca/UrbanWaterPlan.
- emailing comments directly to the project team. Submit questions, comments and feedback by email to urbanwaterplan@vaughan.ca.
To stay informed at every stage of the project, email urbanwaterplan@vaughan.ca to request to join the mailing list.
Public input remains vital to the development of the updated plan. Input collected throughout the study process will help inform final recommendations. Learn more about the plan and process below.
The Integrated Urban Water Plan
The City is responsible for stormwater systems, local water distribution and pumping, and local wastewater collection and pumping. The City’s water systems include:
- wastewater collection systems, including sewers, manholes and pumping stations.
- water distribution systems, including water mains, chambers, valves and booster stations.
- drainage collection systems, such as storm sewers, manholes and catch basins.
- stormwater management facilities, such as wet and dry ponds, hybrid wetlands, underground storage tanks, infiltration trenches/galleries and oil and grit separator units.
- natural heritage features that provide stormwater-related environmental services, such as water quality improvement and water quantity regulation.
The Integrated Urban Water Plan will be the City’s long-term strategy for providing water, wastewater and stormwater management systems that are safe, reliable, environmentally sustainable and financially responsible. Developing a new Integrated Urban Water Plan will improve existing infrastructure assets, plan for sustainability and enhance communities for generations to come. In addition, it advances priorities outlined in the 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan.
The Integrated Urban Water Plan Environmental Assessment
This comprehensive study of the City’s urban water infrastructure will support growth, protect Vaughan’s Natural Heritage Network and emphasize environmental sustainability and resiliency. As part of the assessment, existing problems will be reviewed, solutions will be considered, and preferred water, wastewater and stormwater servicing strategies will be evaluated. The study will also integrate current sustainability, resiliency and climate change adaptation/mitigation initiatives outlined in Green Directions Vaughan, the Official Plan Review and Vaughan Vision 2050, the City’s Growth Management Strategy, in addition to considering applicable provincial and regional plans and policies.
