Improving transit to get people moving
Vaughan calls on
Metrolinx to prioritize next wave of The Big Move projects
The City of Vaughan is at a critical juncture in
its evolution. As it continues with its sustainable growth strategy, public
transit is a key component of getting people where they need to go.
Metrolinx’s
Regional Transportation Plan will transform transit in the Greater Toronto and
Hamilton Area (GTHA) and plays a crucial role in providing transportation
options for commuters. The ultimate goal is to make it easier to travel between
neighbourhoods within the GTHA.
In a
report passed by Vaughan Council today, the City is calling on Metrolinx to
include the following priority projects in their next plan:
- Yonge Subway Extension
- Rapid transit along Jane Street from the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre to Major Mackenzie Drive
- Rapid transit along Major Mackenzie Drive between Jane Street and Yonge Street
- New GO Station on the Barrie Corridor at Concord as part of the Regional Express Rail initiative
Delivering
on Council’s priority to develop transit, cycling and pedestrian options to get
around Vaughan, these important initiatives will contribute to the cultivation
of an environmentally sustainable city and continue to ensure the safety and
well-being of citizens.
QUOTE
“This
is an important time for transit in Vaughan. As our city continues to grow, and
with the development of our new downtown – the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre – we
need to provide solutions to the traffic congestion and commute times that
impact our residents. These projects are an investment in our future and will
support job creation and economic growth, while also benefitting our citizens
and the environment. We will continue to work with the province and Metrolinx
to advance our common agenda, and address key challenges that we all
experience. Together, we will move our city forward and deliver on important
initiatives that are meaningful for our residents and people who travel through
Vaughan.”
