Underground work – including watermain replacements and sewer upgrades – are nearing completion

The infrastructure improvements are progressing in the Woodbridge Avenue corridor project. As part of the City of Vaughan’s Woodbridge Avenue Improvements and Streetscaping Project, the focus is on beautifying the area, respecting its history and completing key underground infrastructure work.

Vital underground infrastructure work is nearing completion and is anticipated to be finished by the end of this year. Additional updates are as follows:

  • Construction will be suspended during the winter season from Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022 to Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2023.
  • Two-way traffic on Woodbridge Avenue will be restored as of Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022.
  • On Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2023, construction within the boulevard areas may resume (weather permitting).
  • All construction is anticipated to be completed by fall 2023.

About the Woodbridge Avenue Improvements and Streetscaping Project

Woodbridge Avenue is a commercial and residential street located in the heart of Woodbridge Village. The Woodbridge Avenue corridor and the surrounding area – from Islington Avenue to Kipling Avenue – have rapidly changed in the last decade with high-density development, including residential and mixed-use buildings, resulting in a larger urbanized area.

The Woodbridge Avenue Streetscape Plan (PDF) was completed in 2017 to address this growth and ensure the design of Woodbridge Avenue continues to be safe, accessible, inviting and timeless. The Woodbridge Avenue Improvements and Streetscaping Project is guided by this plan, as it provides a framework for the layout and detailed design of the public and private streetscape spaces, including pedestrian connections.

Under this framework, the design will:

  • promote walking and transit use.
  • reduce conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles.
  • support daily community life and events.
  • capture inspirational, educational and heritage elements.
  • build on the convenient access to the trail along the Humber River system.

As part of this process, an extensive review of the infrastructure on Woodbridge Avenue was also undertaken in 2020 to prioritize what needed to be completed, and in what order, including:

  • road rehabilitation
  • watermain replacements
  • sanitary sewer upgrades
  • streetlighting improvements
  • traffic signal additions
  • parking lay-bys (designated paved parking areas)
  • streetscape and landscape enhancements

Once the improvements are complete, they will service the existing and future residents and businesses in the Woodbridge Village for years to come.

During construction, Woodbridge Avenue is still open for business! Citizens are encouraged to continue to support local stores, restaurants and organizations throughout the project.

Public input has also been a necessary component of this project. In 2021, citizens were invited to get involved by viewing proposed plans and streetscape design concepts; learning about the project’s status and timelines; hearing about the next steps of the project; and asking questions directly to the project team. Earlier this year, citizens were once again invited to learn more and hear a progress update via a Drop-in Information Session.
