It’s Local Government Week!
Did you know the third week of October is Local Government Week – the perfect time to learn more about the important role this level of government plays in our community.
The City operates within a two-tier municipal structure, which means there are two levels of government providing services to the community – the local municipality (Vaughan) and the regional municipality (York Region).
City staff manage budgets, plan for future growth and ensure essential services are delivered to Vaughan’s residents and businesses efficiently and effectively. Their commitment to public service helps improve our quality of life and supports a thriving local economy.
The City of Vaughan is responsible for:
animal services
building permits
burial permits
cultural services
development applications and zoning plans
fire and rescue services
municipal by-law enforcement
organic, garbage and recycling collection
park and amenity closures
parking enforcement
property standards enforcement
property tax billing
recreation and fitness services
road maintenance on local roads, such as Ansley Grove Road, Chancellor Drive, Kipling Avenue, Woodbridge Avenue and more
winter maintenance on local roads, such as Creditstone Road, Edgeley Boulevard, Martin Grove Road, Vaughan Mills Road and more
Local government also serves as a bridge between residents and decision-makers, fostering a greater sense of connection and community. It’s through your local government that you can share your voice in shaping the future of your neighbourhoods. By attending Council meetings, participating in public consultations and staying informed about local issues, you can contribute to a municipal government that continues to reflect the needs and priorities of our growing community. The City is led by Vaughan Council, which is made up of 10 members – one Mayor, four Local and Regional Councillors and five Local Councillors. The Mayor is the head of Council and is also a representative on York Region Council. Four Local and Regional Councillors are elected to represent Vaughan at both the local and the regional levels of government. Five Local Councillors are elected, one from each of Vaughan's five wards, to represent those wards on Vaughan Council. Vaughan's current Council was elected to serve from 2022 to 2026.
