Applications accepted until Friday, Sept. 18 at noon

The City of Vaughan is looking for candidates to join its Diversity and Inclusion Task Force. This group will provide the City with guidance in the development of policies that promote fairness, mutual respect and an undoubted sense of inclusion among the diverse individuals, communities and groups that live, work and play in Vaughan.

The Diversity and Inclusion Task Force will serve as a forum of discussion to improving the inclusion of all ethno-cultural, national, racial and religious groups among residents, businesses and other stakeholders. The goal is to identify ways to further engage all communities in City programs and services, in addition to providing more opportunities for these groups to network and co-ordinate efforts with each other and with the City.

The group will work toward this goal by:
  • reviewing current policies and practices.
  • reviewing inclusion-related documents from other public agencies.
  • reviewing best practices from other communities.
  • exploring current institutional practices through a diversity lens.
  • assessing any evidence of systemic racism, embedded prejudice and more.
  • inviting input by citizen-stakeholders and others, including subject-matter experts.
  • fostering greater inclusion of less-responsive stakeholder groups in its processes.
  • identifying short-, mid- and long-term recommendations for Council’s consideration.
In addition to two members of Vaughan Council, the task force will consist of nine to 19 citizen members who will be reflective of Vaughan’s diversity – ethno-cultural, national, racial, religious or other. To that end, as part of the application process, applicants will be asked to list those groups with which they identify. Appointed members will serve on this task force from September 2020 to the end of 2021. Meetings will be scheduled for alternating months or at the call of the Chair. At the end of the term, the team will compile a report of recommendations to be brought forward to Vaughan Council for consideration.

To be eligible to apply, individuals must be a Canadian citizen, 18 years of age or older, not be employed by the municipality and be a resident of the city of Vaughan. Interested individuals can submit a completed application package (PDF) by email to clerks@vaughan.ca by noon on Friday, Sept. 18, 2020.

The City of Vaughan’s 2018-2022 Term of Council task forces aim to address specific matters of importance to the public, such as key policies and city-building. The Diversity and Inclusion Task Force will further promote and foster active, safe and diverse communities – a strategic priority as outlined by Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council in the 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan. It will also strengthen the City’s commitment to creating a culture that is inclusive and respectful where all citizens, employees, business and visitors are valued.
