Making progress on Vaughan’s largest park
Answering your North Maple Regional Park questions
North Maple Regional Park (NMRP) is the City of Vaughan’s biggest park project yet – and work to transform it is well underway!
Wondering what’s happening at the 80-hectare (900-acre) park or what it will include once complete? Here are the answers to your most frequently asked questions …
What public amenities are currently available at the park?
In 2018, 80 hectares (197 acres) of parkland opened to the public with the following facilities:
two FIFA-certified artificial turf soccer fields with built-in spectator seating
a park pavilion, including a terrace, washrooms, changerooms and drinking fountains
picnic areas with shade shelters and seating
a toboggan hill (currently closed due to ongoing construction)
an asphalt parking area with spaces for 200 vehicles
a variety of walking and hiking trails
free Wi-Fi that is available at the park pavilion and soccer fields
What’s included in current park plans?
In April 2018, Council endorsed the vision to develop NMRP into a signature park with outstanding recreation and culture opportunities. A comprehensive program is being created to guide the park’s development over the next 10 years and beyond – we’re currently in Phase 2 of the plan. An overview of current activities is outlined in the NMRP Program Update – September 2023.
The City is also beginning the NMRP Master Plan process to plan and program the entire 900-acres, with a focus on future park areas that are currently not available for public use (i.e. closed landfill areas). The master plan will confirm the park’s vision, and help guide long-term park development, programming and management. The master plan will foster opportunities to restore the natural environment, engage the community, and provide a place for active living. Recently, the City awarded the contract for consulting services to O2 Design. This planning process will take approximately 24 months to complete, and there will be many opportunities for the community to provide input. Information on how to get involved will be posted to vaughan.ca/NMRP in the coming months. Stay tuned to find out how you can have a say!
When will the current construction be complete?
The existing construction activities at the park align with Phase 2 of park development, known as the enabling works. Work is almost 70 per cent complete, and includes site grading, servicing and environmental restoration on 52 hectares (130 acres) of land to prepare the site for future recreational facilities and amenities. Here are some highlights to get excited about:
Grading and servicing of the City’s first cricket field and event area is complete, which includes lighting and irrigation. These areas are anticipated to be open for play in 2025.
Restoration of the pond and wetland expansion is currently underway by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, with final planting and other finishing works nearing completion.
An accessible multi-use path and additional trails will also be constructed.
The existing park driveway (Vaughan CARES Way) will be expanded to include a second park entrance with access to Keele Street. A new traffic signal at the park’s north entrance will also be installed.
Phase 2 construction will be fully completed by the end of 2024.
Are there plans for future amenities within the park?
Yes, a new Family Recreation Area is being planned! Guided by three pillars – Restore. Engage. Play. – the area will promote activities related to restoring nature, sharing culture, promoting active living and building community. It will include amenities for all ages and seasons, including playgrounds, water play, a youth zone, shade shelters, boardwalks, pathways, a skating trail, pond lookout, benches, a picnic area, pavilion, gardens, additional parking and year-round washroom facilities.
Check out the area’s concept design to get a sense of what’s to come. The final design will be completed in 2024 and construction is anticipated to begin in 2025. The Family Recreation Area is anticipated to open for public use in 2026. Read the NMRP Family Recreation Area Update – November 2023 for more information.
Further amenities will also be confirmed through the NMRP Master Plan process.
Who do I contact about garbage at the park?
Litter can be reported online at vaughan.ca/ServiceVaughan, under the “Litter, Vandalism and Graffiti” category. You can also contact Service Vaughan, the City’s contact centre, by phone at 905-832-2281 or email at service@vaughan.ca.
Where can I get an event permit?
A Special Events Permit is required to hold a variety of special events in Vaughan, such as athletic events (community runs or races), outdoor exhibitions, filming (including student filming), parades, processions, festivals and street parties/social events. Visit the Special Event Permits webpage to learn more and apply.
Why can’t I let my dog run off-leash at this park?
NMRP does not have a designated off-leash dog area, therefore, you must keep your dog on a leash at all times when visiting. However, there are many places in the city where you can let your dog stretch their legs! Find a designated off-leash dog area near you at vaughan.ca/DogPark.
Who do I contact regarding noise from an event?
