Mayor Bevilacqua and Council inaugurated for 2018 to 2022 Term of Council
Mayor determined to
build on accomplishments
Surrounded
by family, friends and citizens, Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members
of Council were sworn into office during the inaugural meeting of the 2018 to
2022 Term of Council. The ceremony was presided over by City Clerk Todd Coles.
Mayor
Bevilacqua was introduced by Flight Sgt. Goral Prajapati of the 283 Woodbridge
Air Cadets before delivering his third keynote inaugural address. The Mayor spoke
at length about Vaughan’s future and the way forward for the City, declaring
that he is committed to bring the first university to Vaughan and York Region
during this new Term of Council. Building on the success of the Mayor’s Smart
City Advisory Taskforce, Mayor Bevilacqua announced the creation of new
taskforces to address a range of important policy areas, including:
transportation; economic development; the environment; older adult issues;
diversity; and governance. Each taskforce will be chaired by Members of Council
and will include stakeholder and citizen representation. The Mayor also
announced a special advisory committee will be established to maximize the
potential of the hospital precinct.
The
City’s prosperity from 2010 onward has been remarkable, Mayor Bevilacqua said,
as he reflected on transformational city-building accomplishments, including: the
ongoing construction of the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital; the arrival of TTC
subway service to Vaughan; and the opening of Phase One of the new 900-acre
North Maple Regional Park, among so many other achievements.
Mayor
Bevilacqua also recognized members of Vaughan’s administration – led by City
Manager Daniel Kostopoulos – thanking them for demonstrating passion,
commitment and professionalism. During the inauguration, a special signing
ceremony took place, during which Mayor Bevilacqua and Council reaffirmed their
commitment to the Vaughan Accord – a 12-point document that defines the
principles of public service and affirms a promise of responsible, co-operative
and effective governance.
The
meeting began with a formal procession, led by Piper Kirk Hill and the Honour
Guards of Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service and City of Vaughan By-law and
Compliance, Licensing and Permit Services, respectively. The Declaration of
Office was administered by the Honourable Justice Phillip Sutherland. The
Herbert H. Carnegie Public School Choir sang the national anthem, while Vaughan
and Canadian artist Angelica Di Castro performed throughout the evening.
Following
the official ceremony, Mayor Bevilacqua and Council joined members of the
community for a reception held at the Terrace Banquet Centre, featuring Master
of Ceremonies Andrea Trentadue of CHIN-TV and with live performances by the
band SOULAR.
