Vaughan comes together to celebrate Chanukah

During a Menorah Lighting Ceremony at City Hall, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua delivered the following statement, joined by Council, Vaughan staff and members of the community:

“Let me begin by welcoming everyone to Vaughan City Hall to mark Chanukah.

“Known as the Festival of Lights, Chanukah is a story of faith - one that has come to symbolize the triumph of good over evil. It teaches us the importance of religious freedom, tolerance and human dignity.

“For eight nights, families, friends and neighbours will gather to recognize the occasion by lighting the candles of the menorah. During this period of prayer and reflection, we are reminded of how a single vial of oil burned miraculously for eight days on the menorah.

“Chanukah commemorates the struggle of the Jewish people to overcome adversity and to find light in times of suffering. It teaches us that peace can reign triumphant and that, by working together, we can build a brighter, better world for ourselves and our children.

“We value our role as an important centre for the spiritual, cultural, social and educational needs of Jewish families throughout the Toronto Region and across Canada. It is especially important, during the festive season, to foster and support an appreciation for the many cultures in Vaughan, and what they bring to our community.

“I want to remind everyone that we will come together for an additional Menorah Lighting Ceremony taking place Sunday, December 9th, at Garnet A. Williams Community Centre at 3:30 p.m. I hope you can join us. I look forward to celebrating with you once again.

“On behalf of the City of Vaughan, I wish everyone a very happy, memorable and blessed Chanukah.”
