Recognition rooted in City’s commitment to fiscal transparency and accountability

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement at today’s Council meeting:

“I am proud to announce Vaughan has received a prestigious award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the City’s 2018 Budget.

“The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is an international award and the highest form of recognition in government budgeting. The City has received this honour an impressive 11 consecutive years.

“This award reaffirms our shared and ongoing commitment to fiscal transparency and accountability. Our consistent approach to the annual budget process strikes a fiscally sound balance of responsibly managing taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars, while delivering the vital services and city-building initiatives our citizens count on.

“It gives Members of Council and the City administration a great sense of pride in knowing the standard of living in our city has remained very high, while also achieving significant savings. In our latest Citizen Satisfaction Survey, we received a 97 per cent approval rating from residents who agree that the quality of life in Vaughan is good.

“We have a subway connected to the heart of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre – our emerging downtown – and our city will also be home to Canada’s first state-of-the-art smart hospital, Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital. We recently welcomed Niagara University, the first university in Vaughan and York Region, and progress continues on the new 900-acre North Maple Regional Park.

“These are among some of the most notable city-building initiatives in Vaughan – all while achieving $30 million in savings since 2015.

“Our annual budget is a foundational document, drawing on the experience and expertise of all departments, and I congratulate everyone who shares in this well-deserved recognition.”
