Vaughan citizens continue to share a city-wide commitment to inclusivity

Following a flag-raising ceremony outside Vaughan City Hall, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued a statement to recognize this year’s York Region Pride Week.

“Today, the City of Vaughan is proud to once again raise a flag in support of York Region Pride Week.

“This year, in particular, is an important reminder of how groups that were once marginalized, fought against injustice for the basic rights they deserve and continue to do so today.

“This is also a significant year for Pride festivals across Canada and the United States, as this marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, a backlash to police harassment at a prominent gay bar in New York that is credited with sparking the modern LGBTQ2S rights movement.

“More than 20 years ago, I was a Member of Parliament that debated the issue of same sex marriage in the House of Commons. While at the time, the community largely opposed the issue, I remained guided by my values and the personal belief that every human being has the right to live and love freely, especially in an open and democratic society, like Canada.  I voted in favour of same sex marriage and it is a decision I firmly stand by today.

“I am proud that the citizens of Vaughan, like in so many other cities, unite to support Pride Week.

“What we now celebrate together as a community, was at one time a struggle against persecution.

“The growth of Pride Week here in Vaughan and across York Region demonstrates our commitment to shared beliefs that we all have the inherent right to express our true selves. Indeed, love is love.

“It is important that, as a community, we recognize York Region Pride Week and the dedicated volunteers who work to promote the values of dignity, equity and diversity.

“I would like to give my sincerest gratitude to all of the organizations that show their support for the LGBTQ2S community, not only during Pride Week but throughout the year.

“In recognition of their meaningful work in support of human rights, I pledged to work alongside the organization to advance their mission, as well as announcing a $10,000 donation from the Mayor’s Gala Spirit of Generosity.

“I encourage everyone to take part in the year’s Pride parade, happening on Saturday, June 15, and to show their support during York Region Pride Week.”
