Transformative milestone brings Vaughan’s new hospital one step closer to its completion, scheduled for late 2020

The following is a statement delivered by Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua:

“The topping off for the Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital is an example of the hard work, collaboration and commitment the City of Vaughan continues to undertake to deliver modern front-line health care. Pouring one of the last concrete slabs signifies that Vaughan’s new hospital is well on its way to providing invaluable medical care and treatment for people here at home and across the region.

“As co-chair of the $250-million Mackenzie Health Foundation’s Exceptional Care Belongs Here Campaign, I am in awe of the generosity of this community. During this year’s Mayor’s Gala, I proudly announced a historic $20-million joint gift by the De Gasperis and Kohn families. Prominent Vaughan citizen and entrepreneur, Vic De Zen, and his family, have also pledged $10 million. We have now broken through the $100-million mark and are optimistic and hopeful to reach our goal. Today’s topping off further demonstrates the strong and enduring relationships we have built with our partners and what can be achieved when we work together. We are fortunate to live in a place where so many people value and appreciate the important role they can play in helping others.

“The Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital is a $1.6-billion initiative. It will be the first hospital built in York Region in the last 30 years. Cranes tower over the 1.2 million square foot site, which can house up to 550 hospital beds. It will provide 100 physician specialists to Mackenzie Health and present teaching, learning and research opportunities in the medical field. It will employ over 1,800 full-time hospital staff. Ours will be the first hospital in Canada to feature fully integrated smart technology systems and medical devices that can speak directly to one another to maximize patient care.

“Building this hospital is about investing in the health and well-being of our citizens and ensuring we all have
access to the best possible front-line health care for generations to come. As we move closer to completion, let me express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped bring us this far. I am proud of the process, teamwork and sense of pride this city-building initiative has brought to the city of Vaughan.”
