Mayor Bevilacqua proclaims World Autism Awareness Day in Vaughan
Global campaign highlights
challenges, triumphs and education
Mayor
Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement to recognize World Autism
Awareness Day during a flag-raising ceremony in the courtyard at Vaughan City
Hall:
“The City of Vaughan is proud to recognize World Autism Awareness Day. With
the support of our community partners, we are helping to bring attention to
Autism Spectrum Disorder so more can be done to help those living
with autism reach their full potential.
“The financial cost and emotional toll to families impacted
by autism is staggering. Parents wonder if their
local school will have the appropriate resources and personnel to help their
child and are understandably concerned about their child’s future as adults.
“The incredible research into autism has helped foster a better
understanding in developing new approaches and techniques for educating
children who have been diagnosed as on the spectrum.
“The City of Vaughan is committed to
initiatives that support the well-being of our citizens. State-of-the-art
healthcare is on the horizon for residents, as our smart hospital – the
Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital – is nearing completion.
“We are blessed in this city to have people who give of themselves and
who understand that their good fortune is meant to be shared with everyone. Vaughan
is defined by its spirit of generosity.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to every participant of today’s
flag raising ceremony in recognition of World Autism Awareness Day, including
Julian Trozzo, who performed the Canadian National Anthem, Peter Anthony
Colalillo, who helped raise the flag, as well as representatives from Autism
Ontario, Shining Through Centre for Children with Autism, Waves of Changes for
Children with Autism, Crystal Ladder
Learning Centre and City staff.
“While there is still much more work that needs to be done to support
children, youth and adults living with autism, it is my hope that, as a
community, we will continue to unite and advocate on behalf of this worthy
cause.”
