Lui Coiro and Joe Goncalves receive Assistance to a Citizen in Need recognition

The following statement was issued by Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua after a special presentation in the Committee of the Whole (2) meeting on Oct. 14:

“Earlier this week, we were pleased to acknowledge the heroic efforts of Mr. Lui Coiro and Mr. Joe Goncalves with the Assistance to a Citizen in Need recognition.

“This summer, these two gentlemen jumped to action to help a fellow Vaughan resident who was unresponsive and in need of urgent medical attention. Upon discovering a collapsed man in a commercial plaza in Vaughan, Mr. Coiro and Mr. Goncalves called 9-1-1 and performed CPR on him until Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS) and EMS arrived on the scene. I want to express my warmest and sincerest gratitude and appreciation to them both for their swift action, bravery and courage.

“Throughout the global pandemic, we have seen everyday heroes rise to the challenge and answer the call of service — heroes like Mr. Coiro and Mr. Goncalves, who have made a positive and meaningful impact. And as we continue to practise physical distancing and follow strict hygiene protocols in response to COVID-19, they knowingly put themselves at risk to save a man’s life. That speaks to their character as selfless human beings.

“In Vaughan, we are blessed to have compassionate and kind-hearted individuals who are willing to help others in need. Mr. Coiro and Mr. Goncalves’ selfless act of bravery serves as an inspiration for our community. It is an important reminder of the beauty that exists in our world. I know they did not act with the intention of being recognized. However, on behalf of the citizens of Vaughan, I want to offer my heartfelt appreciation for their remarkable efforts. Thanks to them and the outstanding men and women of VFRS, a life was saved that day. Mr. Coiro and Mr. Goncalves have demonstrated enlightened citizenship and represent the very best of our city.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize Fire Chief Deryn Rizzi and every member of VFRS for their commitment to keeping our city safe. They have dedicated their lives to protecting our families, neighbours and public spaces, and we are proud and grateful for their continued service.”
