Holy Cross Catholic Academy Jr. Boys Team capture York Region Athletic Association (YRAA) Championship

During a City of Vaughan Committee of the Whole meeting, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua delivered the following statement, alongside Members of Council:

“I am proud to offer my congratulations to the Holy Cross Catholic Academy Jr. Boys Soccer Team on their recent York Region Athletic Association Championship – the school’s first in more than 20 years.

“Sports is truly a unifying force for good and when teams, athletes and participants - from any number of athletic disciplines - achieve greatness, it is often a result of the collective efforts of many. These grade 9 and 10 boys are deserving of our recognition for demonstrating what can be accomplished through hard work, dedication and leadership. We also know that away from the soccer pitch, there are many other champions who share in this victory, including parents, family members, mentors, coaches and school staff who gave of themselves to help these players fulfill their own athletic dreams.

“We have a great soccer tradition in Vaughan – it is an important part of our community life and our city’s identity.

“In May 2018, I welcomed the Canadian Premier League (CPL) to Vaughan City Hall to announce the launch of its first professional sports franchise based in York Region - The York 9 Football Club will represent the nine municipalities of York Region.

“We also recently opened the 900-acre North Maple Regional Park, with two artificial turf fields and built to FIFA 1-Star standards. Once fully complete, Vaughan’s North Maple Park will be larger than New York City’s very own Central Park. These world-class fields will provide more opportunities for everyone, from avid competitors to soccer enthusiasts, to play and practise their skills, and continue to foster this sport in Vaughan.

“We are proud of our strong network of coaches and volunteers who allow our recreational programs to flourish.

“I have great admiration and respect for those in our municipality who are involved in making this great game available to everyone and, once again, I congratulate these local athletes on this special achievement.”
