The following statement was issued by Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua after a special presentation during the April 26 Council meeting:

"I am pleased to announce the City of Vaughan's Public Works department has earned the prestigious 2021 Tree Cities of the World recognition for its leadership in urban forest management practices.

"The Tree Cities of the World program is an international effort through the Arbor Day Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to recognize municipalities that ensure urban forests and trees are properly maintained, sustainably managed and duly celebrated. The City met or exceeded all five standards required through the Tree Cities of the World program. This is yet another reflection of our longstanding commitment to position Vaughan as a green city. Vaughan was one of only nine municipalities in Ontario to be included. In total, 138 cities from 21 countries were recognized.

“In Vaughan, we are dedicated to championing healthy and sustainable neighbourhoods that will continue to elevate the quality of life for everyone. As one of Canada's fastest-growing cities, we understand that our actions today will help shape our future tomorrow. Planning a resilient city is about striking the right balance between sustainable development and protecting the environment. We appreciate the importance of preserving our natural ecosystems, and as a result, we are taking steps to safeguard and expand our city's tree canopy. To date, more than 30,000 trees have been planted as part of the City's tree replacement program.

“Trees are essential to a sustainable city, contributing to the long-term well-being of our residents and neighbourhoods. They provide environmental, social and economic benefits to communities and businesses, ultimately leading to an enhanced quality of life for all citizens. We take the protection of our trees very seriously. The heart and soul of a dynamic community truly thrive throughout natural greenspaces.

“I want to express my gratitude and appreciation to the Parks, Forestry and Horticulture Operations department and the entire Public Works portfolio for their ongoing efforts to ensure Vaughan remains safe, clean and beautiful.

This recognition demonstrates our shared vision of fostering a safe and sustainable community for everyone, and creating a better and brighter world for future generations to come.”
