Naming ceremony held to honour Vaughan resident
Plaque unveiled at Piazza Tagliavini
The city of Vaughan has
many citizens who are dedicated to enhancing the well-being of their
neighbours. One such resident was Sergio Tagliavini. In honour of his service
to this city, the square surrounding the Monument for Fallen Italian Workers
has been designated Piazza Tagliavini.
In June 2016, a
community group called the Piazza Tagliavini Committee, submitted a request to Vaughan
Council to have the area renamed after the notable resident. They selected that
location because of Mr. Tagliavini’s influential involvement in erecting the memorial
in front of Woodbridge Memorial Arena.
Mr. Tagliavini immigrated
to Canada from Italy in 1970 and began to establish himself as a journalist. In
1984, he co-founded Lo Specchio, and used the newspaper to foster engagement
and involvement in projects for the Italian community. Throughout his life, he
devoted himself to promoting cultural and heritage activities, and supporting
local community groups. Mr. Tagliavini passed away in 2016 at the age of 80.
During a ceremony yesterday,
a plaque naming the piazza, which was paid for by the Piazza Tagliavini
Committee, was unveiled at the square.
