Need sorting help?

Properly sorting your waste items not only helps reduce the amount of garbage sent to landfills but also keeps collection days running smoothly. Here are some examples of where everyday household items belong.

Blue box (recycling):

  • plastic bottles, jugs and containers
  • milk/juice cartons and drink boxes (no straws)
  • steel/aluminum food and beverage cans, trays, plates and foil
  • empty and dried paint cans and aerosol cans (lids removed)
  • unbroken glass bottles and jars
  • paper products (books, magazines, etc.)
  • cardboard, broken down and flattened containers (detergent, dry food boxes, etc.)
  • corrugated cardboard, flattened and tied in bundles no larger than 0.6 metres (two feet) in width and length and 0.3 metres (one foot) in depth.

Green bin (organics):

  • Food-soiled paper products such as tissues, all paper napkins, all paper towels and soiled paper plates
  • Cut flowers and house plants – excluding soil
  • Cat litter and pet waste

Garbage:

  • wipes, masks and gloves
  • Styrofoam™
  • black plastic
  • plastic bags
  • coffee cups and coffee pods
  • food pouches

If you have broken glass, safely package the pieces in a sealed cardboard box labelled “broken glass.”
