Nominations open for Order of Vaughan 2019
Award recognizes exemplary citizenship
The City of Vaughan is now accepting nominations for the 2019 Order of Vaughan – the highest honour the City may bestow on an individual. The nomination period runs from March 18 to July 31. Applications (PDF) are available on the City’s website.
The Order of Vaughan
was an initiative first launched by Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua in 2016 to mark
Vaughan’s 25th anniversary. In its first year, 25 recipients were invested into
the Order. In subsequent years – and for 2019 – up to 10 nominees will be
eligible to receive the Order.
To qualify, a nominee
must be a resident or former long-term resident of the city and a living person
at the time of nomination. Nominations will not be accepted for staff currently
employed by the City, or for current elected public office holders at the
federal, provincial or municipal level. Self-nominations are not accepted.
The award recognizes
individuals who have made a significant contribution to Vaughan through their
endeavours within the following categories: arts and entertainment, media and
communications, athletics, health and wellness, business, philanthropy, public
service, education, science and technology, not-for-profit, equity and
diversity, accessibility, environment and spirituality.
The Order of Vaughan
Selection Committee reviews nominations and recommends successful nominations
to Council for approval. The 2019 Order will be presented by Mayor Bevilacqua
and Members of Council during an official investiture ceremony this fall at
Vaughan City Hall.
QUOTE
“I believe that exemplary
citizenship must be recognized in a genuine, heartfelt and enduring way.
Exceptional individuals who go above and beyond for the benefit of others inspired
me to create the Order of Vaughan. This award is our City’s highest civic
honour and a meaningful expression of our collective gratitude to those who
truly embody the best of what it means to be a Vaughan citizen. What unites these
special people is an unwavering and selfless dedication to make a positive
difference in the lives of others. Thanks to their efforts, Vaughan is reaching
its full potential. I am pleased to invite and encourage local residents,
community groups and businesses to nominate someone worthy of the Order of
Vaughan.”
