The next Curbside Giveaway Days are Aug. 28-29

For those looking to do summer cleaning and add something new to your home, now is your chance. With the next Curbside Giveaway Days taking place from Saturday, Aug. 28 to Sunday, Aug. 29, you can place gently used items at the curb for reuse by others and visit other participating properties to find hidden gems of your own! This is the perfect opportunity to declutter your home and help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.

The schedule for the upcoming Curbside Giveaway Days is as follows:
  • Saturday, Aug. 28 and Sunday, Aug. 29
  • Saturday, Sept. 25 and Sunday, Sept. 26
  • Saturday, Oct. 23 and Sunday, Oct. 24
To participate, materials can be placed curbside and marked “free” on the Saturday morning identified as a Curbside Giveaway Day, beginning at 7 a.m. Any items that are not claimed must be brought in by 5 p.m. on Sunday. Items left at the curb after that time could result in a by-law violation.

Here are a few tips and tricks for successfully participating:

  • Download and print a FREE curb alert poster (PDF) for your items.
  • Only take items that are marked “free.”
  • Keep items you do not want to give away close to your home or inside to avoid confusion.
  • Keep sidewalks and fire hydrants clear.
  • Respect private property and do not walk on people’s lawns or gardens.
  • Obey traffic laws at all times – please do not block traffic or driveways.
  • Share your offerings and great finds using #VaughanCurbGiveaway on social media.

Not sure what you should place on the curb? Books, CDs, DVDs, furniture, small appliances and kitchen gadgets make for great finds. Items that are not reusable, listed on the Consumer Product Safety Bureau or mattresses and upholstered furniture, which could be infested with bed bugs, should not be placed on the curb. Visit the City’s website for a complete list of what items are recommended for the Giveaway Days.

To ensure the safety of everyone participating, please follow these safety tips from York Region Public Health:
  • Adhere to the current restrictions and gathering limits in place.
  • Do not set out or swap items if you or anyone in your household exhibits any COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Do not participate if you have been in close contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Avoid all close contact. Stay two metres away from others.
  • Clean and disinfect items after picking them up and avoid choosing things that are too difficult to clean.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer after handling items or completing the swap.
  • Sneeze and cough into your sleeve or tissue and wash your hands afterward.
  • Wear a mask when physical distancing cannot be maintained, and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
