Proposed Water and Wastewater-Storm Operating Budgets Come to Council April 29
April 16, 2014
The City of Vaughan’s proposed 2014 water and wastewater/storm operating budgets and 2015-2017 plan, including new rates and service fees, will be discussed at a Special Council Meeting on April 29 at 7 p.m. Residents are encouraged to attend and provide their input.
As presented at the Finance, Administration and Audit Committee on March 31, the 2014 budget recommends an annual consumption rate increase of 5.85 per cent for water and 11.5 per cent for wastewater, or a combined increase of 8.85 per cent. With a proposed implementation date of May 2014, this increase equals an additional $6 per month or $75 per year for the average residential property consuming 300 cubic meters of water per year.
More than 70 per cent of the proposed increase relates to the Region of York’s rate increase of 7.5 per cent to purchase clean water and 12 per cent for wastewater treatment services. The remaining 30 per cent, or 2.5 per cent increase, relates to the City’s local services that connect to the regional network.
The City’s portion supports a significant investment in water and wastewater services, ensuring the delivery of clean water to residents and businesses as required by the Safe Drinking Water Act, and maintaining a reliable wastewater and stormwater system. It also contributes to the City’s reserves for the future renewal and replacement of infrastructure.
The Special Council Meeting will be held on April 29 at 7 p.m. in the Council Chamber at Vaughan City Hall, 2141 Major Mackenzie Dr.
