Celebrate National Public Works Week with the City of Vaughan from May 15-May 21

Join the City of Vaughan during the week of Sunday, May 15 to celebrate its dedicated Public Works professionals! The theme of the 2022 National Public Works Week is “Ready and Resilient” – which the more than 400 members of Vaughan’s Public Works team demonstrate day in and day out. The team continues to be prepared to serve the community, remains resilient throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and strives to provide seamless customer service to residents.

To kick off the celebrations, the National Public Works Week flag will be raised, and Vaughan City Hall will be illuminated in orange on Monday, May 16. Each day during the week, the City will be premiering a new video of dedicated Public Works staff as part of the Vaughan, At Your Service series – a behind-the-scenes look at the people who make Vaughan the place to live, work and play. The videos will be posted on the City’s YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn channels. And on Saturday, May 21, residents are invited to stop by the drive-thru Environmental Day at the Joint Operations Centre, located at 2800 Rutherford Rd. Drop off textiles for the donation bin, batteries and electronics for safe disposal, paper for shredding and take home up to three free bags of mulch on behalf of the City in recognition of this important week!

The City’s Public Works team is made up of three departments: Environmental Services; Transportation and Fleet Management Services; and Parks, Forestry and Horticulture Operations. Together, they provide a variety of programs and services that directly impact citizens and businesses across the city every day, including maintenance of municipal roads, sidewalks and pathways; maintenance of parks, boulevards and open spaces; forestry and horticulture services; fleet management of all City vehicles and equipment; traffic services and administration of the crossing guard program; management of garbage and recycling collection; and water, wastewater and stormwater services.

Enhancing operational performance and fostering a culture of continuous improvement is central to the mission of Vaughan’s Public Works employees. Their achievements continue to receive national recognition for innovative thinking, the development of new best practices and a commitment to Service Excellence. National Public Works Week reinforces the City’s commitment to Service Excellence across all parts of the organization, as outlined in the 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan.

Since 1960, the third week in May has been celebrated as National Public Works Week in Canada. Municipalities across the country use this week to educate, engage and inform the public about the essential role public works professionals play in the quality of life in their community.
