Proper permits must be obtained before work begins

May is Building Safety Month – an important reminder for citizens and industry professionals to prioritize safety when planning construction projects. Whether building a backyard deck, renovating an indoor space or developing a condo complex, obtaining proper permits is a necessary step to ensure construction is completed safely and correctly.

Vaughan is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Canada. Since 2010, more than $15.57 billion in building permits have been issued by the City and despite the global COVID-19 pandemic, city-building has not slowed down. In 2021, Vaughan issued 3,189 permits and performed 42,843 inspections. This amounts to $1.876 billion in building construction value – a significant investment into the community.

In response to the demand, the City has innovated its city-building processes to offer a more streamlined, user-friendly experience via Service Vaughan. Through this platform, citizens and industry professionals can conveniently apply for, submit, track and pay for their permits, all at the click of a button. A variety of building, grading and engineering permits are available, including infrastructure engineering drawing requests, pool inspection requests, pool permit renewals, development permits, grading permits and more. Residents can also request a copy of their home survey, apply for a permit to construct a deck, shed, sunroom or pool, and use the online development charge estimator tool before signing a new lease.

Before putting the shovel in the ground, individuals are encouraged to check what permits are needed – here is some information on the types of grading permits and building permits required for various residential construction projects.
