Tune in to the National Public Works Week virtual event on Friday, May 21

Let’s celebrate our hardworking Public Works professionals! Each year, the City of Vaughan recognizes National Public Works Week, taking place from Sunday, May 16 to Saturday, May 22 this year. The 2021 theme is “Stronger Together,” reflecting how the City’s Public Works team works together to continue to provide Service Excellence to the community throughout COVID-19 and beyond.

Citizens can join in, too! There will be a virtual Public Works Week event on Friday, May 21 at 1 p.m. at vaughan.ca/live featuring Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and the Deputy City Manager of Public Works, Zoran Postic. As well, the event will premiere six videos of dedicated Public Works staff as part of the Vaughan, At Your Service series – a behind-the-scenes look at the people who make Vaughan the place to live, work and play. The videos will also be posted on the City’s Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn channels. Watch the Vaughan, At Your Service trailer on the City’s YouTube channel for a sneak peek of what’s to come.

Ahead of Public Works Week, citizens are also invited to thank Vaughan’s Public Works professionals by writing a message on the online comment board. This is an opportunity to show appreciation to these dedicated employees.

The City’s Public Works team is made up of experts who work hard to provide quality services, including winter maintenance, safe drinking water, clean parks, well-maintained roads, trees and shrub beds, and safe cycling and walking pathways – to name a few. Their dedication is reflected in the city-building priorities of the Council-approved 2018-2022 Term of Council Service Excellence Strategic Plan. Enhancing operational performance and fostering a culture of continuous improvement is central to the mission of Vaughan’s Public Works employees. Their achievements continue to receive national recognition for innovative thinking, the development of new best practices and a commitment to Service Excellence. To learn more about the City’s Public Works services and innovations, listen to this Municipal World podcast and read an article featuring Mr. Postic.

Since 1960, the third week in May has been celebrated as National Public Works Week in Canada. Municipalities across the country use this week to educate, engage and inform the public about the essential role public works professionals play in the quality of life in their community.
