Nominate a neighbour with a beautiful garden or lawn until Sunday, July 4

Attention all gardeners and gardening enthusiasts: the City of Vaughan’s 2021 Curb Appeal nominations will close on Sunday, July 4! Do you know someone who has a beautiful front lawn or garden? Nominate them now by emailing their home address to curbappeal@vaughan.ca or calling Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281.

The Curb Appeal Program is an important part of Vaughan’s beautification mandate as it recognizes homeowners and businesses who demonstrate exceptional pride and effort in maintaining their properties. Nominees will be visited by dedicated community volunteers who evaluate the properties. Each year, 750 Curb Appeal signs are awarded based on the following criteria:

  • Overall esthetic of the property is visually appealing
  • Property shows the use of variety, colour and textures in plantings and landscape
  • Design incorporates the use of shade trees
  • Property uses perennials as well as annuals
  • Property shows creativity in design and materials
  • Design uses drought-resistant plantings and other environmental measures such as rain barrels to collect water
  • Property uses mulch to help retain moisture
Please note, the judges’ visits will adhere to all COVID-19 safety measures and orders. Recognized properties will receive a Curb Appeal sign on their lawn in July or August to show their neighbours their dedication to beautification.

Curb Appeal tips

If you’re new to gardening or lawn care, the City is here to help bring your property to life with the following tips:
  • Ensure your grass is cut neatly and is free of weeds. To help it grow thick and healthy, add topsoil and seed and water for long periods infrequently instead of short periods often.
  • Purchase mulch in a variety of colours to make your garden stand out. Not only does it keep soil healthy, but mulch also holds moisture and nutrients, which will help to stop weed growth.
  • Incorporate a variety of plants and flowers in your garden. Perennials such as Bee Balms, Russian Sages, Begonias and Black-eyed Susans are low-maintenance, and pollinators love them. Annuals like Coleuses and Angelonia are a great way to add height and bright colours to your arrangement.
  • Consider adding different coloured and size stones or rocks and light or water features, such as a small fountain, to your garden for originality.
